LEIGH RL Chief Executive Mick Higgins has resigned as a cost-saving measure.

He is, however, likely to remain as the club's chairman with Leigh RMI boss Chris Healey taking a more 'hands on' role in the running of Hilton Park business.

Mr Higgins says he has sacrificed his job in the best interests of the club in view of reduced income from News Corporation next season.

Leigh's share of the Murdoch money will be halved to £150,000 next season and £100,000 in 2001.

A statement from Hilton Park says: "Mr Higgins has made his decision voluntarily in line with the club's policy of prudent financial management. He decided to take this step because of the reduction in monies due from the Rugby League next year." Mr Higgins has been Chief Executive and Chairman for the past seven years, guiding Leigh through three years of being in administration to their current standing as one of the top teams in the Northern Ford Premiership.

"Sacrifices have to be made in the current economic climate," he said. "Ian Millward and the team are more important than my paid position."

Mr Higgins will officially stand down at the end of November, but has now gone on holiday and will consider his position as chairman while he is away.

"It's a tremendous gesture by Mick to give up his salaried position to try and help the club through what are sure to be difficult financial times," said Mr Healey.

"All the directors are adamant we want him to remain as chairman and continue to represent the club in all Rugby League matters.

"His expertise is invaluable and we don't want to lose that."
