OVERWHELMED but absolutely delighted was how the new Bury Woman of the Year described herself after winning the prestigious title.

Mrs Judith Taylor was stunned when she picked up the award at a special ceremony at the Elizabethan Suite yesterday afternoon, October 21.

"I am thrilled," said a delighted Judith. "I never expected to win, I was just pleased to be nominated."

Judith, 53, was presented with a Royal Doulton figurine for her work with Walmersley Road Care Group and her dedicated efforts for disabled people in Bury.

Judith of Kenmor Avenue, Elton, was diagnosed as "spastic diaplegic" when she was only 18-months-old and her family told she would never walk or talk.

But she fought against the odds and married, had a child 15 years ago, and qualified as a teacher.

"It is a real honour for me to be given this title. All the women who have been nominated were worthy of winning," said Judith.

"I thought meeting Cherie Booth when I was nominated last year was a fantastic moment in my life but winning today has topped it without a doubt."

The organiser of the event, Mrs Margaret Robinson, was delighted with the success of the ceremony which was attended by the Mayoress of Bury, Mrs Anne Costello, and last year's winner, Mrs Lily Reid.

All proceeds from the event, now in its second year, will go to Bury Hospice.
