NURSERY school children in East Lancashire will receive free milk from January 2000.

The county council has announced changes to its Milk in Schools scheme, which will provide free milk to nursery schools.

Currently, 41,000 primary school children receive milk under the scheme and most pay £5 a term. Lancashire County Council will now change the scheme to provide free milk to all nursery pupils through the authority's participation in the welfare food scheme, run by the Department of Health.

Coun Tony Martin, chairman of the county's schools and general purposes committee, said: "I am delighted we will be able to help Lancashire nursery schools and classes provide free school milk.

"Our next step will be to consult with schools to find ways of extending this valuable programme to reception classes. Milk provides tremendous nutritional value, which not only helps children's physical development, but also feeds their minds."
