CHRISTIAN churches in Lancashire have joined forces to raise cash for local social work projects and a hospital in Zambia.

Millennium money will be collected from parishioners in a joint appeal organised by the Churches Together in Lancashire umbrella organisation.

The cash will be used to fund new and established Christian schemes throughout Lancashire.

It will also be given to St Francis Hospital in Katete, Eastern Zambia, where the work includes various health and education projects to combat AIDS.

John Hudson, chairman of Churches Together in Lancashire, said: We hope the church-goers of Lancashire will respond generously to this historic appeal.

"It will bring much-needed assistance to deprived people in both Lancashire and Africa.

"Half the money raised will go to local projects."

Details of the appeal will be spelled out in 35,000 leaflets to be distributed in local churches.
