REGARDING the high incidence of accidents on some roads which have wrongly been designated as "black spot" roads, I fully agree with readers who say there are no bad roads, only bad or inexperienced drivers.

These are mainly in the 18-27 age group and account for the largest percentage of accidents.

This is because of lack of driving experience and failure to recognise that driving a vehicle requires a great amount of skill and attention.

Lack of attention when taking bends is shown in accident after accident and I have lost count of the reports of young drivers who have had accidents involving no other vehicle where they have "lost control on a bend."

Many accidents are caused by the young driver who loads up his or her car with five or six friends and doesn't realise, until too late, that braking and cornering becomes much more difficult.

Passing the driving test requires only, in general, that the person concerned can start a car, put it in motion and stop it. There is too much traffic on the roads today for such a basic test.
