AN East Lancashire dairy famed for its yoghurt is a regional winner in the annual farming 'Oscars'.

Little Town Dairy, Longridge, is the North West winner in the Food from the Countryside section of the National Farmers' Union's President's Awards.

The awards, now in their second year, reward excellence in agriculture and horticulture across seven categories.

Little Town Dairy has been producing yoghurt in Thornley for 15 years and won the award for its work in building links with the general public through farm open days and farmers' markets.

Managing director Eileen Forshaw said: "We are absolutely delighted. Buying locally-produced goods benefits the whole community, not just farmers, but local shops, pubs and other businesses.

"I would like to thank all my staff for their hard work and the National Farmers' Union for its help and support."

Competition organisers said the standard of entries from the North West was very high, leaving judges with a mammoth task of selecting winners.

NFU regional director Steve Heaton said: "The competition makes us realise just how much talent, creativity and sheer hard work there is in the farming community.

"I never cease to be amazed at just how dedicated our farmers are to the countryside. I congratulate the winners, but take my hat off to all the entrants who are each worthy of our admiration."

Mrs Forshaw and the other regional winners were presented with certificates and prizes at a ceremony at the Crofters Hotel, Garstang.

They now go forward to the national finals at the NFU AGM in London next February.
