HUNDREDS of East Lancashire staff at two of the country's top building societies were facing an anxious Christmas following the announcement of a multi-billion pound merger plan.
Staff at the Leeds Building Society in the area said they were stunned at the news of a merger with the UK's biggest building society, the Halifax. They feared that offices and jobs would disappear.
