A BLACKPOOL student is "made up" after scooping second place in the 1999 Skills Olympics in Montreal.

But there was disappointment for Jenna Bailey (pictured), a HND beauty therapy student, who after four gruelling days of competition was told she wouldn't be awarded a silver medal.

Jenna, who returned home on November 19, finished only half a point behind the winner but was informed medals were only given in skills where more than six countries take part.

The 21-year-old student at Blackpool and the Fylde College said: "I am thrilled. It was a fantastic experience and I am so pleased to have got second place.

"But I didn't know about the medals rule until after the competition finished.

"I was a little disappointed I didn't get a medal and think they should award as many medals as possible - it's no skin off their nose."

Course tutor Sue Simpson who chaperoned Jenna said: "I think if Jenna had been used to the products and equipment she could well have won because it was so close.

"Even so, second is a fantastic achievement. We are very proud of her."

But that's not the end of the excitement for Jenna - she will collect her certificate of distinction at the House of Commons on December 2.

And Jenna has also been invited by the Olympic Committee to be a judge in the qualifying stages of the next Skills Olympics to be held in Seoul, Korea, and to be a trainer for the UK qualifier for the event.
