A TEMPORARY board of governors is to be set up for a controversial new special school in Blackburn.

The school will replace Dame Evelyn Fox and Blackamoor Schools, which will close when special school provision in Blackburn and Darwen is restructured.

Government approval has yet to be given for the new school - but the temporary governing body is being set up to ensure a smooth transition when the go-ahead is given.

The decision to set up the new board was taken by Blackburn with Darwen Council's special school governors sub-committee.

A council spokesman said the new body would comprise eight governors, the head teacher designate and three parents.

He said: "The first task will be to decide a name for the new school and set the process in motion of getting the new school established smoothly."

Parents and teachers opposed the restructuring of special school provision and set up a campaign group.

East Lancashire Health Authority also expressed concerns about the move.
