STANLEY crashed out of the FA Umbro Trophy to an unfortunate first half own goal in a match that saw home side Spalding fail to have a single shot.

The Reds, who gave a debut to recent signing Steve Caswell at right back, should have been in front in this second round replay by the break, having twice hit the woodwork.

After seven minutes good work by Mark Brennan created a chance for Williams but his right foot shot came back off the upright.

Stanley struck the woodwork again on 23 minutes as they were awarded a free kick 20 yard from goal. Player manager John Coleman curled the ball round the Spalding wall and with goalkeeper Kevin Cross stranded, the ball hit the outside of the post.

Disaster struck three minutes before the break when Dave Herlock's free kick was curled into the near post only for Reds midfielder Steve Carragher to head the ball into his own net.

Accrington launched an immediate response and almost equalised when Coleman's first-time shot was well saved by Cross.

On a windswept night, the second half turned into a niggly and dull affair with neither side being able to create any real scoring chances.

The closest to a goal came on 64 minutes when Carragher sent over a corner from the right, Jonathan Smith, at the far post, got above the Spalding defence but his goal-bound header was headed off the goal-line by Spalding's Nigel Vince.

In the end, Stanley were left to count the cost of the squandering two-goal lead and missing a penalty on Saturday.
