EAST Lancashire communities could benefit from £20 million in grants being offered by the Millennium Commission.

Small lottery grants are being offered to help with projects to benefit their local communities.

The grants, of £2,000 or more, aim to help people develop skills which they can then put to use in their local area. Mike O'Connor, director of the Millennium Commission, said: "We are celebrating the start of the year 2000 by making £20 million available to charities and other not-for-profit organisations who want to support individuals who can make a difference in their communities.

"I challenge organisations all over the country to take advantage of this magnificent scheme which is bringing lottery money to the grass roots ."

The commission has already formed partnerships with organisations including Age Concern and Save the Children on 81 different schemes.

Applications can be made up to March 20.
