SIX fire engines from as far afield as Preston and Lytham St Anne's were called to East Lancashire when a dog fell down an embankment.

Two appliances from Clitheroe Fire Brigade were initially called to Brungley Park, off Waddington Road, Clitheroe, at noon yesterday, where Border Collie Meg, had slipped 20ft down an embankment and become trapped.

Station Officer David McGrath explained: "Two pumps from Clitheroe attended the scene as well as the incident support unit from Accrington. Then the major incident support unit travelled from Preston, followed by a personnel pump and, because it involved a rope rescue, expert crew from St Anne's were called."

The dog was eventually rescued after a member of Clitheroe Fire Brigade was lowered down the embankment on a rope. It was put in a pouch and raised to safety.
