MOTORISTS were gearing up for a year of frustration as work finally began to uncork a notorious bottleneck.

But Lancashire County Council told drivers who regularly get stuck at Blackburn's Brownhill roundabout it was a case of "no pain, no gain".

Work was due to start on the £3.4 million project to ease congestion - after a wait of more than a decade.
