A DOG lover is delighted to be inundated with letters and donations after highlighting the plight of a mongrel who was found in a horrific condition at a house in Blackburn.

Glenys Fryer, of Green Lane, Blackburn, appealed for help in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph for donations towards the dog's treatment, and is thrilled with the terrific response.

Glenys rescued the dog after she visited Aspen Valley Kennels in Oswaldtwistle and heard the dog was due to be put down.

She named her Soldier because she says she is a survivor, and now she wants to find her a new home.

Glenys said: "I've had a lot of lovely letters, mainly from pensioners, and I've received about £180 in donations towards her operation.

"People have been wonderful, and I was nearly in tears when I read the letters. I'm really grateful to everybody, especially our vet who's been absolutely marvellous.

"I've written back to people who included their address but a lot of letters were anonymous, so I'd like to say thank you to everyone for caring. "Soldier has now come into season and she needs spaying, so she is being looked after at Champion Boarding Kennels in Goosnargh.

"We have not found a home for her yet. I've looked at several prospective new homes but I've not found anything suitable. Ideally she needs a new owner who lives alone and is not very elderly."

Glenys explained that Soldier had been found at a house in Blackburn with her owner who had died three weeks earlier. She had survived but suffered horrific injuries. Her leg was broken in several places and her foot was badly infected. Her leg had not been treated so the nerves had died and the muscles had wasted. She also had a trauma to her eye and it was weeping all the time.

Soldier had an operation to amputate her leg at Brian Holroyd Veterinary Surgeons, Simmons Street, Blackburn.

She is about five years old, and is a good natured dog. She is a medium size, with a short-haired sandy coloured coat and white paws.

Anyone who can offer Soldier a loving home can contact Glenys at 97 Green Lane, Blackburn BB2 4SR, or telephone 01254 207660.
