HOUSEHOLDERS across East Lancashire can help cut global warming and save themselves money, according to environmentalists.

The Worldwatch Institute's latest report has revealed that a rise in carbon dioxide emissions not only causes global warming but also has other unpredictable side effects, such as stronger storm systems.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has joined the Millenergy scheme, which aims to protect the environment by encouraging home owners to save energy.

Millenergy is a consortium of 13 Lancashire local authorities who are working together to try to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Draught proofing, cavity wall insulation and using more efficient appliances are all ways of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and saving on fuel bills.

John Gibson, housing surveyor at Blackburn with Darwen Council, is responsible for including energy saving measures as part of the council's housing refurbishment programmes.

He said: "There have been some dramatic changes in climate and now is the time to step up the pace in saving energy.

"Decisions made now will affect the future of our entire world."
