Grimsby Town Reserves 1 Burnley Reserves 1

THE CLARETS hit back to earn a share of the spoils at Grimsby yesterday thanks to a second-half penalty from Ronnie Jepson.

Matthew McKenzie put the home side in front after 20 minutes and was then denied a second by a Craig Mawson save.

But Burnley went close to drawing level before the break when a low cross from Glen Little reached Paul Smith at the back post and his shot was cleared off the line by Danny Butterfield.

However, the lively Smith played a key part in Burnley's 66th-minute equaliser as he was bundled to the ground by Ben Chapman following a ball into the box from Micky Mellon, who also turned in a useful performance in the centre of midfield.

Jepson did the rest from the spot and Burnley went close to taking maximum points which would have lifted them into the Pontins League Premier Division's top three just four minutes from time.

Substitute Chris Scott, who had replaced Peter Swan, burst into the box but was denied by a Matthew Bloomer tackle as he he shaped to shoot from just six yards out.

Burnley reserves: Mawson, Weller, Cowan, Brass, Heywood, Jepson, Little, Mellon, Smith, Robertson, Swan (Scott).
