A PREACHER from Ohio in America is the minister of a new Baptist chapel in Blackburn.

Gary Kopfstein is leading services at the Islington Baptist Chapel, on the corner of Islington and Canterbury Street.

Mr Kopfstein and his wife, Jan, came to Britain in 1973 and worked in Scotland and Hertfordshire before moving to the North Preston Evangelical Church in Fulwood, Preston of which the new chapel is an extension ministry.

Mr Kopfstein said they were gifted the building by the trustees and renovation work on the building's school room started in December.

An opening service last month was attended by 160 people from across Lancashire and Mr Kopfstein said he had been "very encouraged" by the response to the new chapel.

Currently the chapel is holding services on Sundays at 10.30am, when a creche is available, and Bible study and prayer sessions at 7.30pm on Tuesdays.

There are plans to add other meetings and activities to the schedule soon.
