PUPILS at Helmshore County Primary School helped to plant 600 trees on land near to Camms Mill.

The youngsters were joined by members of the Helmshore Residents Association, Groundwork Rossendale and Rossendale Environmental Task Force.

The planting of the mini-woodland is only the beginning of improvements intended for that area of Helmshore.

Other work will include improving overgrown and hazardous pathways, laying steps, installing gates, planting of hedgerows and providing benches and litter bins.

The work is intended to open up the site and to encourage local people to use it.

The scheme has been supported by Rossendale and Lancashire councils, BT Access for All, NWW Landcare, Rossendale Partnership, ELWOOD, a campaign for more tree cover in east Lancashire, and Trees of Time of Place, a national tree-planting campaign.
