HUNDREDS of purple and green balloons were released in Blackburn town centre to mark the start of International Women's Week.

Incorporated into Blackburn with Darwen's Festival 2000, the week-long celebration aims to recognise and value the diversity of women's contributions to activities within the community and beyond.

The launch took place at the clock tower in King William Street, and also featured music roadshow Magic Mark & Dalek.

Councillor Maureen Bateson, chairman of the International Women's Week Forum, said: "We value the contribution made by women in our community and through this week of activities we hope to bring to the forefront some of the issues affecting women within the borough.

"The council and the many voluntary and community groups organising events throughout the week are here to offer encouragement and support and invite women of all ages to come along and get involved."

Full details, including a packed programme of events, are available from Blackburn and Darwen Town Halls, Jubilee House, community centres, libraries and other council outlets, or by telephoning 01254 585437/585110.

Coun Mary Leaver, centre left, and Coun Maureen Bateson are pictured hanging on to the balloons before the launch, surrounded by helpers.
