A LEFT-HANDED gorilla who encounters difficulties at school is the subject of a new book, written by a 15-year-old pupil at Southlands High School in Chorley.

Clare Nolan wrote and illustrated the children's book called Gus Goes Bananas as part of the work of the school's Young Enterprise Group, called Spectrum.

The book tells the story of a young gorilla called Gus who is left-handed. He has some difficulties when he first joins school and all his problems are solved by the wise monkey.

The idea for the book came from the Spectrum team, who had been looking at the left-hand market as a niche market for their company. They have already produced rulers for left-handed pupils which have sold well to primary schools.

The book is aimed at children aged six to nine years and is being sold at the Young Enterprise Trade Fairs, where a cuddly Gus the Gorilla will be part of a raffle.

Brian Souter, deputy headteacher, said: "We are delighted with the book. It's interesting, funny and imaginative and gets the message across to left-handed children very clearly."

The book is available in two sizes, a large copy is £2.50, and a small copy is £1.99.

Anyone who would like a copy can contact the school on 01257 414455.
