THE story of the battle for women's suffrage in the mill towns of East Lancashire will be retold next month by Jill Liddington, author of the classic history "One Hand Tied Behind Us".
The focus will be on the involvement of local women in the first decades of the last century - the Independent Labour Party's Selina Jane Cooper, of Nelson, Harriet Beanland, also of Nelson, Margaret Aldersley of Burnley and Emily Murgatroyd of Brierfield.
They were known as the Suffragists, rather than the Suffragettes of the upper classes.
The book is just about to be re-published.
The talk is at Nelson Library on April 5 at 7.45pm.
