EAST LANCASHIRE went on flood alert today following the overnight deluge of rain.

The worst affected areas were Ribchester and the Rossendale Valley.

Police were asked motorists to stay away from the Blackburn Road area of Ribchester after the level of the River Ribble continued to rise. Southgate Lane, Sarmatian Fold estate, Greenside and the Ribchester Arms (pictured) were all put on an amber flood warning.

A red alert was put out for the Ribble Irwell at Ramsbottom.

The railway line was flooded between Burnley and Accrington and services were affected.

Problems were also reported at West End, Oswaldtwistle, King Street, Whalley and the bridge on Waddington Road, Clitheroe.
