SCHOOLS in Pendle and Rossendale have grounds for celebrating after winning awards from a national scheme aimed at improving playgrounds.

Holy Saviour RC Primary, Nelson, and Rossendale pupil referral unit, Rawtenstall, were among 10 schools in the North West to each receive £100 from the BT Grounds for the Future scheme.

Holy Saviour will use the cash to help pay for a seating area near to raised gardens in the playground while the referral unit plans to create a wildlife area. The schools also won one-year's membership of national environmental charities, Learning Through Landscapes and British Trust for Conservation Volunteers. Both help schools improve their grounds. They had to submit detailed applications about their plans.

Pictured celebrating are Holy Saviour pupils, from left, Alex Gibb, Amanda Kelly, Roshae Wilcock and Sarah Hayat.
