BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent today refused to rule out a possible move for giant goalkeeper Liam Sutcliffe, who is currently on trial at Bradford City.

The 6ft 5in stopper has had scouts flocking to Farsley Celtic's Throstle Nest ground this season following a string of impressive performances in the UniBond League First Division.

The Clarets and West Ham United are both reported to be monitoring the situation.

But Bradford boss Paul Jewell is leading the race for the 20-year-old's signature after inviting him to Valley Parade for a two-week trial, where he is receiving coaching off Neville Southall.

Sutcliffe impressed in Bradford reserves' 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough on Tuesday night. Ternent today denied Burnley had a representative there to see how he performed.

And he refused to get drawn into speculation regarding the player.

"I don't comment on speculation, you know that," said the Burnley boss.

"But we didn't have anyone at Bradford on Tuesday night."

Meanwhile, midfield strongman Lenny Johnrose today admitted it's time for the Burnley players to stand up and be counted if they are to fulfill their promotion dream.

The Clarets head for revitalised Wrexham on Saturday needing three points to steady the ship after back-to-back defeats. And Johnrose stressed there's no room for moping about with play-off and promotion places to fight for.

He said: "We are all grown men. We're disappointed but there's no point sulking around the place.

"We've got to pick ourselves up and try and win the game on Saturday. "We are always confident of picking something up. My personal opinion is that we are one of the better sides in the division so we've got to be confident of winning games.

"We've got to go down there and prove that."

Wrexham have won their last three games to climb away from relegation danger with on-loan striker Danny Allsopp scoring four goals in that spell following his arrival from Manchester City.

Burnley, eight points adrift of the top two, need to nip that revival in the bud but Johnrose insists that having to win is nothing new.

"I think everybody's been saying for the last 10 games or so that they are all big games and nothing's going to change between now and the end of the season.

"We have literally got to take every game as it comes and try and win the next one," he added.

Burnley missed an opportunity to capitalise on a couple of other shock results on Tuesday night when they were beaten 2-0 by Luton Town.

It wasn't a desperately poor performance but there is room for improvement in both penalty areas and Johnrose is looking to put things right at the Racecourse Ground.

He added: "Obviously we had gone to win the game and that's not the way it worked out, so it was very frustrating. "It's difficult to take heart after you've been beaten. There are a lot of disappointed lads but we know we created chances and it was one of those nights when the ball wouldn't go in the net.

"Having said that, it would have been nice to keep a clean sheet which is down to the players one to 11 and we'll try and do that on Saturday."

The midfield man was one player to emerge with credit from the Luton game, when he turned in an inspired all-round performance.

And Johnrose is emerging as a key player in the Clarets' line-up after a frustrating first half of the season when his opportunites were limited by a combination of injuries and the team's good run.

He received plenty of flak for a tackle which injured Preston skipper Sean Gregan in last Saturday's derby, but insisted that the criticism and David Moyes' condemnation of the challenge hadn't had an effect.

"I haven't got a clue what he said so I don't know what you mean at all.

"I just want go and play like everybody else and that wasn't an issue," he added.

An ankle injury kept Tom Cowan out of Cambridge's winning side against Bristol City on Tuesday night.

But the problem isn't anything serious and the on-loan Clarets defender hopes to play against Scunthorpe at the weekend.

And Peter Swan was due to play for York City's reserves at Scarborough last night before a decision is made on his longer term future at Bootham Crescent.

Colne Clarets transport for Saturday's game at Wrexham leaves the Morris Dancers at 11.45 and the Cafe Claret at noon.
