THE Health and Safety Executive has been called in to investigate an accident at Calderstones NHS Trust after a worker trapped his hand in a vehicle wheel.

Porter and driver Anthony Metcalfe, 47, of Notre Dame Gardens, Blackburn, was air-lifted to Royal Preston Hospital after the accident on Monday afternoon.

Graham Jowett, the trust's deputy chief executive, said the ambulance crew thought that Mr Metcalfe might have had to undergo micro-surgery, but he has been discharged from hospital without needing a major operation.

"It seems that he has lost the tip of one digit. We are now trying to get all of the details so that we can pass them on to the Health and Safety Executive," he said.

A spokesman for the HSE said a full investigation would be undertaken as soon as the reports were sent by Calderstones.
