OVER-75s may be getting a free TV licence from November 1, but that is if they have a pre-paid coloured TV licence valid until October 31, or pre-paid monthly direct debits from and including May, 1999.
Is it lawful to cancel my monthly direct debit after April's payment?
A reply from the TV Licensing Authority implies that I should cancel my direct debits after April's payment and take out a short-term licence that expires on October 31, 2000, or continue paying them until and including October and reclaim the necessary refund.
Most services give a five per cent discount for paying by direct debit.
TV licensing would gain the interest on my money, to my loss. Thousands of over-75s will be in a similar position.
