NEW boy Carl Lomax proved a last gasp hero for Colne but lost his nerve minutes later and had to settle for just one goal on his home debut.

The striker converted an 85th minute penalty into three points for Colne in this FNWTL Division Two clash after referee David Enright blew for a push, sending Alsager keeper Chris Bells sprawling the wrong way.

Lomax could easily have bagged another two minutes later with just the keeper to beat but was denied by a fine save.

After last week's heavy defeat, Colne remained resolute at the back in a defensive tussle. Lomax was the brightest light for Colne, causing the Alsager defence problems throughout and almost opening his account early on when a shot flashed just over the bar.

After the break Alsager started with menace, Colne shotstopper Mark Canning saving well from Steve Faint's free kick until Lomax, unable to find the net at Castleton in his first appearance, opened his account.

An encouraging result for Colne, who were well served by Gary Hind who had a flawless game at the heart of defence.
