A MAN was being questioned today about the shotgun shooting of teenager Adam Hayes after being arrested less than half a mile from the scene of the attack.

The local man was detained in the early hours of Saturday, seven weeks after the 17-year-old was gunned down close to Witton Park.

Adam, from Redlam, Blackburn, was blasted at close range in the chest and arm and suffered a collapsed lung. He was attacked in Preston Old Road just after midnight on Saturday February 12, as he returned home from a night out with three friends.

Detectives said at the time Adam was lucky to survive the attack and warned the mystery gunman could strike again. Police revealed a man fitting the description of the gunman had approached and threatened several groups of teenagers in the weeks before the shooting.

A team of 40 detectives have been working on the case since the shooting.

Police arrested the suspect around 1am on Saturday in Preston Old Road.

He has been questioned over the weekend and an application was made to a magistrate yesterday to extend his detention until late today.

Detective Inspector Bob Eastwood of Blackburn CID said: "We are still investigating the incident and we are still actively pursuing a number of leads.

"We have arrested a local man and he is being questioned at Blackburn police station."
