DAVE Bowman will be testing his mental and physical strength when he takes part in an SAS-level trek in Wales.

Dave, of Coleridge Street, Blackburn, is a member of the Sports and Hygiene UK Combat Fitness Team, which sets itself challenges similar to those faced by members of the special forces.

He will be part of a seven-strong team walking the Long Drag, a route through the Black Mountains of the Brecon Beacons.

The route is used by the SAS as part of its selection process and takes in eight mountains, all of them more than 2,500ft high.

Dave's team will set off at midnight on April 22 and will take about 18 hours to complete the 64km course.

A five-man back-up crew will meet them at various points along the way to ensure they are all right.

Dave, 51, an ex-Army physical training instructor and professional sports coach, said: "It is just a case of setting yourself against the conditions faced by the special forces, and at the same time we raise a bit for charity."

The proceeds from the trek will go to Derian House children's hospice at Chorley.

Anyone who wants to sponsor the team should contact Dave on 01254 672157.
