A HYNDBURN historian has produced a new guide to one of the region's most industrial walkways.

Canal historian and author Mike Clarke, 52, of Accrington, launched his guide 'The Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Hyndburn', at its half-way point in Church.

Mr Clarke, who has been involved with canals for 30 years said he was so interested in the history of the canal because as a historian living in Hyndburn, he felt that both the canal and East Lancashire were two of the most important factors in the development of the Industrial Revolution.

Coun Brian Walmsley, chairman of Hyndburn Council leisure committee said: "The towpath is well worth a walk along.

"There are many wonderful views to enjoy as well as unique views of the towns it passes." The new guide, which features everything from a short history of the canal to a guide to its wildlife, has been commissioned by Hyndburn Borough Council and sponsored by British Waterways.

The free publication is available from Accrington Information Centre, council offices and libraries.
