ADMINISTRATORS handling collapsed furniture group UNO are now sifting through hundreds of claims from East Lancashire customers.

But they cannot say whether customers will get their money back or receive furniture ordered.

The Blackburn store was the first to be opened in the UNO chain and attracted customers from across the area.

Hundreds have paid deposits for suites but still don't know whether their money or furniture is safe.

"We are currently sifting through claims from customers, but are not in a position to say what their individual positions are," said a spokesman for accountants Arthur Anderson, who are handling the group's affairs. They have said customers who have paid deposits since March 7 should be safe, but are unable to say what the situation is for others.

Those most at risk are customers who have paid cash in part or full payment for suites.

Those who have paid deposits or full payments by credit card or under a credit agreement should be protected. Trading standards officers say they have been deluged by calls from customers who have paid up to £2,500 for suites.

The firm went into administration in Feburary after announcing disastrous results and seeing its share price plummet.

Customers who have paid deposits but have not received their suites should write to UNO plc (in administration), Central Office, Gorsey Lane, Widnes, Cheshire WA8 ORG. They should give their name, address, details of what has been ordered, receipt number and details of how much has been paid and by what method.
