Pilkington Recs 32 Blackbrook 12

RECS claimed their first success against their local rivals for a number of years in this Hays Chemicals St Helens Cup encounter.

Brook had no answer to the home side's opening dominance which saw them race into a 22-nil interval lead.

Recs forwards exerted early dominance with Dave Houghton, John Rees and Neil Morris featuring highly with their workload. Half-backs Mark Forber and Alan Fletcher were instrumental in most of Recs' attacking moves.

Tries were scored by Morris, Forber, full-back Chris Hillam and pacy wingman Dave Archer. Fletcher kicked three conversions.

To their credit the visitors stuck to their task in the second half and managed their first score through a try from Mike Maloney. They tightened their defence and restricted Recs more in this period.

Fifteen minutes from time with victory assured, Recs were throwing the ball around and a long defence splitting pass from Fletcher saw Recs' rangy wingman Jeff Albin canter in at the corner to score by the corner flag.

Brook, however, had the last say, as Jason Mitchell scored under the uprights. Centre Ian Callaghan kicked the conversion.

Pilkington Recs A 33 Leigh East 4

Recs clinched the Division Six title in fine style.

They opened their account after 12 minutes, when following a mazy 50 metre break from centre Darren Haigh, Rick Yelland carried on the good work before lively hooker Andy Fairhurst plunged in to score from acting half-back. Stand-off Mark Forber converted from wide out and five minutes later the stand-off cooly slotted a drop goal to open up a seven-point lead. East then enjoyed a period of territorial advantage but were unable to penetrate a solid home defence in which John Mather, Dave Houghton, Yelland and Fairhurst were very prominent.

Five minutes from the interval Recs swept up field and a long pass from Mark Jackson saw Haigh step inside to score.

In the second half Jackson and Haigh combined to put prop Yelland in for a try wide out.

Soon after East looked certain to score, but excellent cover defence from wingman Andy Burns kept a clean defensive record for Recs.

Following good work from full-back Keith Grimes, Jackson weaved his way through to score a try wide out. He himself added an excellent touchline conversion.

Midway through the half, East crossed for a deserved try through their left wingman, scoring by the corner flag.

The last 10 minutes turned into the Mark Jackson show as firstly he raced 60 metres to score holding off three men on the way, he kicked his second goal.

Next following a Burns run, he completed his hat-trick. Substitute Graham Saunders kicked the goal.
