WHEN I read the reports that Hampshire's new superstar Shane Warne could earn up to £750,000 in salary, sponsorship and marketing deals -- with speculation that the figure might even reach £1 million -- for just five months work this summer, the mind boggled.

It also flew back to the summer of 1991 when the same Shane Warne -- having just come to the end of his stint as Accrington's then rather-less-famous professional -- was enjoying a pint or five at another Lancashire League club's end-of-season 'do'.

As I recall, he was substantially overweight, clearly too fond of the 'tinnies' and thinking no further ahead than worrying about the possibility of getting another contract to play a summer of Lancashire League cricket.

This week, one of the five greatest cricketers of the century (according to the sport's bible Wisden) flew into England with not only his financial status but also his legendary status guaranteed for all time.

It's a funny, old game, innit?
