A SQUAD of eight from Blackpool Bowmen Archery Club took part in the first major outdoor competition of the year, with mixed fortunes.

Held at Bradshaw, Bolton, the contest attracted archers from across northern England, the Midlands and even Scotland.

Blackpool's Linda Cullen, a newcomer to the sport, shot exceptionally well against experienced competition. After holding third spot for much of the day, she kept the pressure on and eventually clinched second place in the compound category with a fine score of 798.

Not to be outdone, 10-year-old Chris won the junior compound section with 260 points.

In the hotly contested men's compound competition, fast improving David Sandham shot a remarkable 862 but still could not make it into the top three.

However, junior Michael Baker kept the flag flying for Blackpool with a score of 560 to win the junior recurve contest.
