UNPREDICTABLE Australian weather today hampered Carl Fogarty's preparation for Sunday's second round of the World Superbike championship.

A wet morning meant Fogarty could only put in five laps around the Phillip Island track.

And a windy afternoon caused Fogarty to aggravate his shoulder injury.

He said: "It has been given me a little bit of trouble. The wind is so strong that you are fighting against it -- it's murder trying to pull the bike in.

"So I had some treatment from the doctors."

Fogarty had been quickest after the morning's free practice session, sharing top speed with Edwards VTR at 282kmh.

But, in the afternoon's first qualifying session, he put in another 20 laps and was 0.3 seconds off the fastest lap time set by Colin Edwards.

Former team-mate Troy Corser was a fraction of a second quicker in making second place on provisional pole before tomorrow's final qualifying and Superpole.

Today's World Superbike championship qualifying times: 1 Colin Edwards, USA (Castrol Honda) 1m 33.974s, 2 Troy Corser, Australia (Aprilia) 1m 34.258s, 3 Carl Fogarty, GB (Ducati) 1m 34.273s, 4 Noriyuki Haga, Japan (Yamaha) 1m 34.651s, 5 Juan Borja, Spain (Ducati) 1m 34.858s
