West Park 31 Caldy 7 PARK rounded off their league season in convincing style on Saturday.

But early chances went begging at both ends. Visitors' full-back Paul Hart missed an easy penalty while Park prop Ross Bell had the ball shaken from his grasp by a try-saving tackle on the line.

The first score came when Park flanker Rob Hanson stole the ball in a tackle and Chris O'Toole, Sean Fletcher and Neil Ryan combined to send left-wing Steven Briers in for a corner-flag try. Paul Bailey, out to add to his 200 points tally for the season, missed the conversion.

Caldy put the home line under pressure from their heavier pack only to miss another penalty hitting the upright from close range. From a subsequent scrum on half way a superb break by O'Toole fed Phil Lawrenson and the centre held off a would-be tackler to score, Bailey adding the goal.

Caldy had the greater share of possession and territorial advantage but two great tackles by Park number eight Steve Bibby produced turn overs and the defence remained sound. Right-wing Chris Stabler crossed the Caldy line as Park sought to add to their 12-nil half time lead.

And as the visitors' defence faltered, the whole Park pack forced their way over but were refused the 'try' as the referee was unsighted.

But, from a line out, slick passing put Stabler in at the corner. A 12-man passing move should have brought a try to Briers but faulty grounding ruled out the score. As Neil Slater and Mark Potter replaced Phil Lawrenson and Elliot Laughton a solid scrummage enabled O'Toole and Ryan to send Martin Strett in for the inevitable try, Bailey converted and Park were home and dry as skipper Sean Fletcher left the field to be replaced by Alec Atherton.

The combination between scrum-half O'Toole and back row Bibby had been a major factor, both players showing their experience in dealing with the difficulty of an outweighted pack and Bibbys block busting run from O'Toole's inside pass saw Strett in for his second try and Bailey's third conversion. As Park relaxed with the game in the bag Caldy's best player, centre Alastair Saverrimutto sent Andy Corscaden in for a deserved try, the winger also adding the conversion followed soon after by the final whistle bringing an end to West Park's most successful ever league campaign.
