AS "Worried Sick" (Your Letters, Apr 14) lives in Brandlesholme, I can understand concerns about their son being allocated a place at Coney Green High School.

I live in Radcliffe and I too would have been similarly astounded had my son been offered a place at a school in the Brandlesholme area.

My son and I made an informed choice and put Coney Green first after we had visited other schools in the borough. Did you?

The Education Department always tries to allocate first choices of school then uses other determining factors, such as distance and suitability.

"Worried Sick's" councillor friend is very mistaken. Students who attend Coney Green do very well and last year's leavers had excellent results, raising Coney to 28th most improved school in England and eighth in the LEA league tables. Among GCSE pupils, 52 per cent achieved five or more A*-C grades and 100 per cent achieved five or more A*-G grades.

Wise parents have already opted for Coney Green and as such the intake for September 2000 is approaching capacity. Existing Years Seven and Eight are full and parents are asking to move their children to our school.

It is interesting to note that only seven parents from the catchment area of Coney Green selected Tottington as their first choice.
