ST HELENS Local Education Authority has initiated the Health for Life 'Choose' project involving all the borough's primary schools, as well as pupils of the same age in special schools. The aim is to ensure that all pupils in Year Five take part in a drugs education programme.

A team of teachers from Dance in Education have spent some weeks on tour with a performance followed by a dance workshop, with 60 schools being visited and more than 3,600 children hearing stories from the 'Hopeless Hippy.' The project, commissioned by St Helens LEA, is funded by the Drugs Standards Fund.

The 'hippy' warns of the danger of taking drugs such as nicotine, alcohol and solvents and makes the youngsters think about being responsible for their own decisions.

Latest research says that children aged 10 and 11 are more likely to remember the lessons learned than at any other age. St Helens LEA has promoted a programme for this age group ensuring each child is fully informed.
