YOUNG people in East Lancashire who make a contribution towards good citizenship, could have their achievements recognised through the Philip Lawrence Awards.

Named in honour of murdered London head teacher Philip Lawrence, the awards are open to an individual or groups of young people aged 11 to 20, who have made an outstanding contribution to their community.

Previous winners have been involved in a variety of actions, including anti-racist projects, youth provision and art work.

Home Secretary and Blackburn MP Jack Straw, said: "These awards celebrate the very best in young people and encourage a generation of good citizens."

The awards are supported by a grant from the Active Community Unit at the Home Office and are run by the National Youth Agency in partnership with the Rowland Company.

They say that community work brings out the best in young people and makes a real contribution to the lives of others by building confidence, promoting safety and reducing crime.
