AN orphan foal now has a name -- thanks to a competition run in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.
The foal, now just over a month old, lost her mother days after being born at Shear Brook Farm, Rishton and her tragic tale first came to light when firefighters were called out to help lift the foal's mother.
Vets confirmed the birth had been to much for her -- and put her to sleep. But the tale prompted the farm's owner, Joan Gardiner, to run a competition to name the foal.
After a story detailing the competition was published in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, Mrs Gardiner has being flooded with entries and, after deliberating with the horse's owner, Jean Woof, they have chosen -- Princess Zara.
The name was picked by Olivia Carr, eight, of Petre Crescent, Rishton.
Mrs Gardiner said: "It is a lovely name."
Olivia was presented with her prize, an Easter egg, when she met the foal earlier this week.
Our picture shows Olivia meeting the foal which she named at Shear Brook Farm.
