POLICE and council officials are investigating complaints about disturbances outside a controversial club.

Earlier this year the Lancashire Evening Telegraph revealed that lewd acts and illicit lap-dancing had been taking place at the The New Top Club (pictured), in Whalley Road, Clayton-le-Moors, which police are investigating.

Now it has been revealed that a man was arrested after trouble outside the club on Wednesday and police inquiries are continuing.

Inspector Dave Whittle of Accrington Police said: "Police were called for a number of incidents outside The New Top Club which resulted in one man being arrested. Inquiries are continuing."

Club owner Mohammed Sarwar said: "There was some fighting outside but there was no trouble inside the club. What happens outside is nothing to do with me."

He refused to make any other comments.

A spokesman for Hyndburn Council today said: "We have had complaints from local residents about disturbances on Whalley Road over a number of nights. Our environmental health department is investigating the matter."

Licensing officer for Hyndburn Sgt Brian Hopwood said police were seeking advice from the Crown Prosecution Service following the Evening Telegraph's undercover investigation at The New Top Club.

The topless barmaid nights are still taking place on Thursdays.
