AVID newspaper readers in Burnley are likely to exceed their school's own excellent targets achieved by last year's pupils, using our NIE Super Story Search literacy resource and daily delivery of the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

Paul Holmes, English teacher at Walshaw High School, is confident that all 160 girls in this year's year nine are so engrossed in their news reading exercises that the eighty per cent target achievement of 1999's group may be beaten.

The girls' high school is using our material for the fifth year running to meet the media related requirements of the National Curriculum reading scheme and to prepare pupils for KS4. "It's a particularly good activity to follow the SATs exams and makes a welcome change from the more usual text books", said Mr. Holmes.

"In fact some girls become quite competitive about the project and like to be first to spot a particular type of report. But all abilities are catered for in the material and all pupils learn a great deal about their own locality and other parts of the world, at the same time as extending their vocabulary".

The Super Story Search workbook is being used for homework as well as in class and parents are ensuring that the newspaper tasks are completed before pupils claim their reading rewards and certificates that come as part of our pack.
