BURNLEY have not closed the door on Ian Wright despite the reported confirmation that he will quit football.

As exclusively revealed in the later editions of last night's Lancashire Evening Telegraph, the former England and Arsenal striker will say that he intends to retire from professional football on Friday night's Jerry Springer show -- and that would suggest his Burnley days are over.

But chairman Barry Kilby has said a meeting between manager Stan Ternent and Wright is scheduled for the end of June -- and nothing is decided as yet after a new deal was offered by Burnley last month.

"The show was filmed two weeks ago and Ian has just stated his original intentions, what he said to us when he joined Burnley, that he would play until the end of the season.

"He has just answered a question honestly and if he does decide to retire, good luck to him. But we would love him to play for us next season.

"Both he and Stan are on holiday at the moment and a chat is scheduled when they both get back.

"He is still our player until the end of June so I say let's have a chat and we will go from there."

And futher doubt has been cast on the decision after his former Crystal Palace strike partner Mark Bright spoke out.

"I talked to Ian yesterday and I would say it is not true. Ian says one thing on Monday, another on Tuesday and another on Wednesday! "He will have an operation on his ankle on Monday and then see what the surgeon says and how he feels.

"He came to Burnley as a favour to Stan Ternent who we both worked with at Crystal Palace to help them get promotion and he did that.

"I think he will be leaning towards retiring because of his family, he has been away from them but you never know with Ian," Bright told Radio Five Live Breakfast.

When asked if he thought Ian Wright would be at Burnley next season, Bright said : "It is difficult to say. I know what he is like. he will probably think 'I'll havea go until Christmas.'"

Wright said his family commitments have forced him to decide to hang up his boots.

"It's been a hard decision because I've got all the people in Burnley, the manager is a close friend and I've made really good friends up there but on the other hand my little girl is growing more and more naughty and she doesn't listen to me because she hardly ever sees me.

"My family are the major factor in me not playing anymore plus I have had a very good career and it is other people's turn now."

Burnley Independent Supporters Association Secretary Angus Williamson has said he will be watching the how with bated breath. "We'll have to see how it is quoted whether it is taken out of context or not. I don't usually watch Jerry Springer but I will certainly tune in tomorrow night."

Wright has won almost every honour there is to win in football -- the Premiership, FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup all during his seven years at Highbury.

He signed for Burnley last February from Celtic until the end of the season with the intention of retiring in the summer. His four goals in 15 games for the Clarets helped them to promotion to the First Division and he admitted he had "some tough decisions to make" over the summer.

It seems he had come to a conclusion by the time the Springer show was filmed -- but the mystery over his future looks set to continue for at least a few more days.

The chairman of the newly formed Central Lancashire Clarets Bill Mellor said: "It is sad that he is going but to be fair we only had him until the end of last season and then it was his intention to retire.

"He has done what he wanted with the club and done what we wanted him to, which is help us get promotion.

"When he came on the field, though, it was like having a second captain.

"I just hope he returns on July 31st to collect his medal in the friendly against Newcastle. It would be nice to say a proper good-bye."
