FIREFIGHTERS cut a 20-year-old driver from the wreckage of his car after a head-on crash.

Colin Binder was trapped by his legs in his Vauxhall Corsa after the accident in Pilsworth Road, Bury, near the entrance to a quarry. He was given medical treatment at the scene before he was eventually released and taken to Bury General Hospital.

Mr Binder (20), who lives in Langley, was treated for a fractured wrist, dislocated knee, suspected fractured ankle as well as cuts and bruises.

Two other vehicles, an Elf heavy goods vehicle and Peugeot Boxer van, were involved in the accident on Friday (June 2).

Lorry driver Trevor Jolley (49), of Oldham and van driver Ian Horrobin (39), of Wigan, both escaped injury.

After the accident, two fire crews from Bury and a third from Heywood fought for 45 minutes to free Mr Binder.

Bury-based Station Officer Pete Seddon said: "He was trapped in the vehicle by his legs and suffered a bad fracture of the wrist as well as other injuries.

"We took about 45 minutes to extricate him. We took the roof off and then cut the car's sills and then lifted the vehicle up so the engine dropped forward and took the weight off his legs."

Paramedics set up drips at the scene before the injured man was taken by ambulance to hospital.
