THE fate of a proposed taxi firm, run exclusively by and for women, lies in the hands of Preston Council's planning committee after plans came under fire from a group of residents.

Sandra Chester, secretary of Preston Hackney Carriage Association, is all set to manage Lady Kabs, which would be based on Fylde Road, along with Lorraine Ahmad, a freelance taxi driver, who wants to set up the firm as she believes many women would be reassured knowing their driver were female.

But some residents are against it because of the noise they claim the six-strong fleet of cabs would create. Around 20 people have signed a petition against it, saying the existing firm, Ashton Taxis, in Steeple View is more than enough.

Mrs Chester and Mrs Ahmed have now agreed to meet with Coun Valentine, who represents Riversway ward, and residents to discuss their plan.

Mrs Chester said she was saddened that people were against her plans and responded to accusations of sexism when she said: "Lady Kabs will be for the benefit of those women who feel vulnerable when alone with a male driver, no matter how safe and trustworthy they may be. How can I be sexist when I am going to employ two male receptionists, and I have 30 male drivers working for my other firm Call 'a' Cab?"

Coun Ian Valentine said: "I don't object at all to a women-only taxi company - my concern is with the views of the residents in my ward and their worries are increased parking and noise problems in such a residential area."

Coun Valentine said he has provisionally booked The Connelly Centre in Steeple View for Friday June 23 for the meeting, but if this venue falls through it will be held at St Walburg's Parish Centre, St Walburg's Church, Wheaton Road.

The council's decision for planning permission is expected on June 29.
