THE mother of a girl who sustained multiple injuries after being trapped under a mountain of scaffolding and rubble has urged builders to take steps to prevent children playing on their sites.

Linda Bannister's appeal to the industry follows the Health and Safety Executive's announcement that nobody will be prosecuted for the incident involving Linda's seven-year-old daughter Abigail in April at a building site in Apple Tree Way, Oswaldtwistle.

Scaffolding supporting supplies at the site came crashing down on top of Abigail, of Orchard Drive, Oswaldtwistle, while she played with her four-year-old pal, Sam Houghton, also of Orchard Drive.

Abigail was taken to the Blackburn Royal Infirmary with a punctured lung, broken rib, internal and external bruising, cracked pelvis and chipped teeth.

She remained in hospital for a week.

Doctors described her quick recovery as "remarkable."

Sam needed 10 stitches to his head and was kept in hospital for two days.

The HSE immediately launched an investigation while Fairclough Homes, who are developing the site, also probed the incident.

The HSE confirmed to the Lancashire Evening Telegraph that no action was being taken.

A spokesman said: "We have concluded our report and we are not prosecuting anybody in connection with the accident. "We are pleased to note that steps have been taken by Fairclough to make it harder for people to get onto the site.

"We would urge people to use this accident as an example of a lucky escape and we hope it presses home the importance children not playing on building sites."

Linda, 35, said: "I have not been to the site but I will be pleased if they have worked to make it harder for children to play there.

"I have been told they have made an effort to put up more signs.

"Builders should use Abigail's accident as a warning because next time it could be much more serious.

"Abigail was fortunate. We are still seeking legal advice but she has recovered."

Fairclough Homes said they had not seen the contents of the report so did not want to comment yet.
