A COUNCIL is planning to build a £3 million leisure complex itself in a bid to bring more entertainment to an East Lancashire town.
Through it's joint venture company, Globe Enterprises Ltd, Hyndburn Council is currently investigating the viability of building a five-screen cinema, 20-lane bowling alley and fast food restaurant, all of which would then be let on long term leases to big name firms.
The Council is now seeking permission from to John Prescott, Secretary of State for the regions, to sell a section of land off Moreton Street, Accrington, to Globe Enterprises for a knock-down sum.
Globe Enterprises, with support from its bankers, would then build the cinema, bowling alley and fast food outlet, ending a 10 year wait for new leisure facilities in Accrington.
Council leader Peter Britcliffe said: "I am confident we can attract the private investment necessary to achieve what, for many years, seemed like Mission Impossible.
"Discussion with bankers and under way and we expect the operators will agree terms for 25 year leases shortly."
Full details of the plans will be unveiled at next Wednesday's Town Centre Regeneration Board next Wednesday at 6pm with all residents from Hyndburn invited.
