DARREN Peacock's move to Portsmouth is in danger of collapsing unless the player agrees to a massive pay cut.

The 32-year-old defender has asked for time to think over a move after holding talks with Pompey boss Tony Pulis on Monday.

But the South Coast club today admitted they are struggling to meet the former Newcastle man's wage demands.

And, unless the player decides to lower his sights -- which could mean a £6,000 wage cut -- then he could be back in limbo at Ewood.

"Graeme Souness gave us permission to speak to Darren so he came down for talks," said Pulis. "But the problem with Darren is his wages.

"They are way above what we can afford so he has gone away to think about it so we'll have to see what happens. "He's coming to the twilight of his career now but he's got a fantastic attitude.

"And he would be great for the younger players we are trying to bring through here because he's played at the highest level and his experience would help them.

"It would mean a substantial drop in his wages but he knows that.

"I've been as honest as I possibly can with him so it's now down to him."

Peacock is believed to be on a weekly five-figure sum at Ewood.

But Pompey are operating within a tight wage structure and can only offer around £4,000 a week.
