SHOPLIFTER Patrick Smith walked straight out of the Food Weighhouse and into the arms of a waiting police officer.

Blackburn magistrates heard that sharp-eyed constable Michael Dixon had seen Smith go into the shop and had watched through the window as he loaded up with £15 worth of sweets and chocolate.

And PC Dixon arrested Smith as he left the shop without making any attempt to pay for the goodies. Smith, 41, of Lawrence Street, Blackburn, was fined £50 with £50 costs after pleading guilty to shoplifting.

Kevin Preston, defending, said he could offer no other explanation than that Smith was hungry and has a sweet tooth. "He was very surprised when he walked out of the shop and straight into the arms of the law," said Mr Preston.
