A TRANSPORT system for disabled people has been shortlisted for a top national award.

The Dial-a-Ride service has been nominated for the prestigious honour in the national EASE -- Ease of Access, Service and Employment -- programme, run by the national charity Queen Elizabeth's Foundation for Disabled People. The service, which is provided by Darwen and Blackburn Transport Limited, provides public transport for local people with mobility problems.

Funded by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, the scheme is aimed at people who find it difficult to use conventional public transport.

Coun Ashley Whalley, executive member for regeneration, said: "Dial-a-Ride provides a wonderful service for people who are unable to use conventional public transport because of disability or mobility problems. "

In the last year, more than 13,000 people have used the service and most of the journeys were shopping expeditions, medical appointments and recreational trips.
